Phytochemistry, Antibacterial activity and Chromosome number of two species ofDaphne fromAlgeria

The chemical composition of essential oil isolated from Daphne gnidiumand D. laureolaby hydrodistillation, was analysed by GC and GC/MS. A total 31 compounds representing 85.2% of the oil were identified in D. gnidium, and 47 components representing 91.3 % of the total oil in D. laureola. The chemical composition of D. gnidiumand D. laureola, is very different, the only common component is palmetic acid. D.gnidiumis characterized by palmeticacid,Eicosene, linoleicacidand Dodecane.WhileD.laureolacontains themajor products; palmiticacid, thymol,Dremenin, phytolacetat, tritriacontaneand α-pinene. The essential oil of D. gnidiumhas low activity againstEscherichia coli and no effect oncereus ,Micrococcus luteus ,Staphylococcus aureusand the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae . The essential oil of D. laureolaof the two populations showed low activity against Micrococcus luteusand Escherichia coli, whileStaphylococcus aureus ,Bacillus cereusand Saccharomyces cerevisiaeshow significant resistance to this oil. The population of D. gnidiumand D. laureolastudied showed a diploid chromosome number 2n = 2x = 18.
