A Review on Plasmonic Nano-biosensors for Virus Detection with a Focus on Coronavirus.

Our atmosphere is constantly changing and new pathogens are erupting now and then and the existing pathogens are mutating continuously. Some pathogens become so deadly that they put the whole technological advancement of humans under question-such as the case of SARS-CoV-2, however, this is not the only time. SARS-CoV-2 has become a pandemic but within this very decade several other deadly virus outbreaks were witnessed by mankind like Zika virus, Ebola virus, MERS etc. Though conventional techniques of virus detection have succeeded in detecting these viruses to some extent, they are time consuming, expensive and require a lot of manpower. Plasmonic biosensors can become a promising alternative to the conventional techniques. So this review discusses in details the latest development in plasmonic biosensors for virus, viral particles and antigen detection and the future direction of research in this field. Detection of SARS-CoV-2 is given emphasis in this review as rapid, reliable and accurate detection is necessary to put an end to the ongoing pandemic.
