Assessment of the bird strike robustness of turbofan compressor vanes through advanced numerical modelling and extensive calibration testing

In this chapter, an overview of the increasing bird strike problem and an introduction to bird strike testing will be given first. After that, the broader context of this PhD in the large FP7 project E-Break will be considered, including the justification of this work. Finally, the objectives of the PhD and an outline of the book will be given.
