The process of early identification

Considerable time and energy has been devoted both to designing and to carrying out a wide variety of procedures for identifying children with language impairment. This chapter begins by discussing the relative meaning of the terms ‘examination’,’ surveillance’ and’ screening’. It then turns to identifying the criteria which should be used to evaluate all screening measures and a wide variety of such measures are examined. Finally the chapter will turn to the subject of who should carry out identification procedures and which ages are most appropriate for doing so.
