Development of the Monitoring System in the Smart Distribution Substation in Guangzhou, China

Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau Co. Ltd. used status detection and environment perception technology for smart transformation of the distribution substations. Until 2019, 1157 distribution substations have been upgraded for smart transformation and put into service. This paper introduced the four major modules of the upgraded smart distribution substation monitoring system and, consequently, the development of the smart distribution substation inspection and control system will be described. Operation and maintenance cost was reduced, man power was saved and the management level of the distribution substations was improved. Based on that, a full coverage of another ca. 40,000 distribution substations is planned for the smart transformation by 2027, as part of the smart grid transformation.
