Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Handbook

This book presents a comprehensive guide to the identification and description of the elements of the geologic environment. It focuses are the data required for the analysis and design of engineering works, the physical and engineering properties of geologic materials, and the procurement of the relevant data. It discusses the prediction of geologic conditions, test-boring procedures, different geophysical methods and their appropriateness, various methods for determining engineering properties of materials, and design formulation criteria. The textbook is divided into three major sections. Part I, titled Investigation Methods and Procedures, covers the areas of exploration, measurement of properties, and field instrumentation. Part II, titled Characteristics of Geologic Materials and Formations, covers the identification and classification of rock and soil, rock-mass characteristics, geologic classes and characteristics of soil formations, and surface and subsurface characteristics of water. Part III, titled Geologic Hazards, covers landslides and other slope failures, ground subsidence, collapse, and heave, and earthquakes. It includes a discussion of the causes, effects, modes of occurrence, and methods of investigation and treaatment for each phenomenon.
