Modeling the Influence of the Real-Time Traffic on the Delay of the Non Real-Time Traffic in IEEE 802.16 Network

In this paper we provide an analytical model for an efficient dynamic capacity allocation in the IEEE 802.16 wireless metropolitan area network, in which the non real-time traffic can utilize the bandwidth unused by the real-time traffic. We investigate the delay of the nrtPS service flow as a function of the capacity allocation of the rtPS (ertPS) and UGS service flows. Unicast polling is used for the bandwidth reservation for the nrtPS and rtPS (ertPS) service flows. The delay analysis counts for both the reservation and the scheduling delay components. The nrtPS packets arrive with Poisson process. The model enables asymmetric capacity allocation and asymmetric nrtPS traffic flows. The exact mean overall delay is obtained for the nrtPS service from the numerical solution of the appropriate queueing model with batch packet service by means of the embedded Markov chain technique. The analytical model is verified by means of simulation.
