Review of VLSI Implementation of Continuous Wavelet Transform

The wavelet transform (WT) is a very effective mathematical tool for many applications such as signal processing, image coding and pattern recognition. Special-purpose hardware is needed to implement the huge computation of WT. The VLSI implementation of continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is of conspicuous superiority in speed, power consumption, and the frequency range applied, also flexible ways of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the up-to date advances of research on this field. Associated problems are also discussed. Finally, prospective developing directions of CWT VLSI implementation are predicted. The implementation of continuous wavelet transform by using instantaneous companding circuits is a new area of research including theory and method of synthesis of wavelet functions as well as wavelet transform.
