Entwicklung eines integrierten Quer- und Längsreglers zur Fahrzeugführung Development of an Integrated Lateral and Longitu- dinal Automatic Controller for Vehicle Guidance

Summary A concept is presented for a driver assistance system providing integrated support to the driver during lane changes by monitoring the vehicle environment as well as by providing longitudinal and lateral vehicle guidance. The system is associated with the ConnectedDrive concept of the BMW Group, which is designed to achieve comprehensive driver support by intelligent integration of driver, vehicle and driving environment. The article begins with a survey of the basic longitudinal and lateral guidance subsystems. In order to derive requirements for the integrated controller concept, the key driving tasks during lane changes are then described. The functional concept is presented, followed by a description of simulation tools which were used during the early phase for a methodical development and verification of the controller. Requirements on sensors performing detection of the driving environment are formulated.
