Environment, planning processes, and organizational performance of churches

Churches have rarely been the foclus of research dealinig with strateggic mnagement issues, although their in ipact on individuals, as well as oni society as a whole, is equal to or greater than the imnpact of nmany butsiness organizations. The study reported hereii was designaed to fill some of the inaformationa void. Data were obtained from a samiple of 175 chii 7ches, and the relationships of chuirch size and growth to perceptiotns of the environment anid to planning processes were examined. The results indicated that perceptions of the environmilenit, or more specifically the importance of certain entvironmiental factors used in decision-mnaking, were related to the level of planning sophistication. In addition, platning sophisticationi was found to be related to the size and growth of churches.
