Development of an Engineering Software Calculating Pump Head of A Cold Water Plumbing System

Nowadays, every building built has its own specification and system need to be installed for the building function properly. One of the crucial system in every building is cold water system. Cold water systems provide water to and around the home or building. Cold water supply system design varies depending on the building type or requirement of the building. After a technical drawing for a building was completed, the first system that must be designed is the cold water supply system as the size of the water storage cistern can only be calculated after the water demand calculation was completed. This is to enable any modification to the technical drawing of the building can be made. By obtaining the storage size and the pipeline drawing, the calculation for the pressure loss along the pipe and the pump head can be initiated. By completing the cold water supply system then other system such as fire protection system, sanitary system can be designed. The aim of this study is to develop a program which can calculate the head pump of a building which did not exceed 30 meter. The formula used for the friction loss calculation was Hazen-William friction loss formula. The parameter investigated and examined were the accuracy of the program to the manual calculation. The program also was compared to other free program online. The program was created using Visual Basic Programming (VBA) coding in Microsoft Access. The pump head obtained from the program was analyzed and compared to the manual calculation and other free software online. The result shows that the value obtained from the developed software were the same with the manual calculation and have slight difference with the free software online.
