FAST NEUTRON DAMAGE IN TYPE-304 STAINLESS STEEL AND HIGH-NICKEL ALLOYS.

A materials capsule containing lncolo y800, Hastello y-X, lnconel-625 tensile specimens, electron microscopy disks and a Type-304 stainless steel supporting strip was irradiated in EBR-I1 to a peak fluence of 6.4 X 10' n/cm2 over a temperature range ,of 750 to 12750 F (400 to 690°C). No voids formed in the Type-304 stainless steel' irradiated at temperatures greater than 650 "5°C (1200 * 25"F), but void size increased and number density decreased with increasing temperature of irradiation. No voids were found (zero swelling) in lnconel-625. Precipitation strengthened alloys had higher ultimate strength and 0.2% yield strength after irradiation. Al l high nickel a110 ys exhibited reduced ductility after irradiation.
