Kinetics of human mammary carcinomas and their correlation with the cancer and the host characteristics

A study has been carried out on biopsies from 66 human primary mammary cancers and 8 lymph node metastases. The labeling index greatly differed in morphologically similar tumors, while a negative linear correlation was found with the patients' ages. The presence or absence of metastases at the time of mastectomy did not interfere with the proliferation rate of primary tumors; on the contrary, a significant correlation was found with the pre or postmenopause status and with the log of tumor volume. No significant differences were found between the proliferation rate of the neoplastic cells in the breast and in metastatic lymph nodes. The potential doubling time ranged from 1.2 to 109 days with a median value of 15.3 days. The cell loss was calculated to be 90%.
