Thick volume hologram for microwave frequency band: Design, fabrication, and test

A method is proposed for the fabrication of a thick volume hologram for applications in the microwave frequency band. Artificial dielectric technology is used to realize the transverse modulation of refractive index. Design guidelines and principles are explained. A prototype is fabricated based on the proposed method and tested to demonstrate its validity. The efficiency of the prototype is approximately 70% in the transmission mode that is typical of “thick phase holograms”. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first time that a thick volume hologram is fabricated in the microwave frequency band.
