Corrosion Inhibitors in Concrete

Corrosion protection methods currently being used to extend the life of reinforced concrete structures in a chloride environment are reviewed, and it is noted that combinations of calcium nitirite corrosion inhibitor and microsilica and calcium nitirite and epoxy coated steel have been successfully used. Calcium nitrite is used commercially on wide scale in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Its production, use, and test results are discussed. Tests have shown that calcium nitirite also protects galvanized steel and aluminum, and has provided benefits in cracked concrete. It has also been found that calcium nitirite becomes more effective as concrete quality improves.
