CATÁLOGO DE LOS ESCORPIONES DE VENEZUELA (ARACHNIDA: SCORPIONES)

Catalog of the scorpions of Venezuela (Scorpiones) Abstract: Venezuela is the first South American country for scorpion diversity. The description of an important number of new species and, the recent taxonomical changes have drastically altered the composition of this group of arachnids. An updated list of the Venezuelan scorpiofauna is presented: for each species there is detailed information on type material and geographi- cal distribution, with taxonomical comments and a selection of bibliographical references. A list of excluded species recorded from the country by previous authors is added. At the moment the Venezuelan fauna is seen as including five families (Buthi- dae, Chactidae, Euscorpiidae, Hemiscorpiidae and Scorpionidae), 17 genera and 184 species. Of the latter, 55 have been de- scribed in the last five years, raising to 168 (91.3%) the number of elements endemic to the country. Lastly, some aspects of the Venezuelan scorpiofauna are discussed.
