Abstract : Should the US Army become involved in combat anywhere in the world--but more particularly in Europe--it would not be prepared for the inevitable operations on urban terrain. Yet, many advantages would be offered the defender by their use. This study investigates the use of urban areas in relation to Soviet airborne assault and operational maneuver group operations, the US Army AirLand Battle doctrine and the III Corps. In each instance the ability of fight in or from Built-up areas is critical to the success of the defense of Europe. Nonetheless, the Army is unprepared in terms of training and weapons and, most important, is peculiarly disinterested in the entire subject. (Author)
