Role of Functionalized Pillararene Architectures in Supramolecular Catalysis.

Pillararenes (PAs) possess many useful features (e.g. rigid, capacious, hydrophobic cavities and exposed functional groups) that have led to a tremendous increase in their popularity since their first discovery in 2008. In this minireview, we have emphasized a progressive scope for the consideration of functionalized PAs and their assembled supramolecular materials utilized in the field of catalysis. We aim to provide a fundamental understanding and mechanism of the role PAs play in catalytic process. The topics subdivided based on PAs rim/cavity promoted catalysis, PAs based nanomaterials, and polymeric materials in catalysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first review on PAs based catalysis. This minireview not only summarizes the fabrications and applications of PAs in catalysis but also anticipates the future research efforts in applying supramolecular hosts in catalysis.
