Abstract The breakup of the Bell Telephone System in the United States has created new data processing disaster recovery planning problems. Where disaster recovery plans exist they assume that the communications common carrier will independently handle the restoration of data communications during the disaster recovery process. That is no longer true. Existing plans should be revised to reflect this new disaster recovery situation.
