Technologies for the Young.

Abstract In designing computer experiences for young children, educators must address at least four issues: (1) children's attitudes about symbolic technologies which amplify human capabilities to send and receive information; (2) educational aims, particularly those which train children for literate production rather than literate consumption; (3) opportunities for children to control their own learning; (4) quality of instructional encounters, especially those which allow teachers to explore problem-solving, learning, and other cognitive processes with children. Educators who develop uses for computers in schools must likewise determine their vision of how children should acquire and cultivate knowledge in the future.
