On the Probability that the Better Team Wins the World Series

James L Kepner received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Illinois State University in 1965 and 1968, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics from The University of Iowa in 1976 and 1979. Since 1965, Professor Kepner has been active in mathematics and statistics education, having taught mathematics at the high school and community col? lege levels and statistics at The University of Iowa and at the University of Florida. He is presently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at St. Cloud State University in St Cloud, MN, where he teaches statistics and some mathematics. In addition to his teaching, he is active in research, having published numer? ous articles during the past six years. He serves as a referee for several of the major statistics journals, is a member of the ASA/NCTM Joint Committee for Statistics and Probabil? ity Education, and he does private statistical consulting for local businesses and communities.
