The majorobjective ofthispaperistheidentification ofthe dominantmodalresponsesoflarge scalepowersystemdynamic simulations. Theresults ofsimulations aretheangle-time responses of synchronous machinerotors. The rotorinertias coupled via transmission lines produce secondorderresponses, whosedamping factors andundampednatural frequencies areidentified byaModel Adaptive Reference Control(MARC)system. TheMARC identificationsystemisapplied successfully totheswing curvesofa 1700bus power systemsimulation toidentify thelocalandintertie mode parameters. Specifically thesensitivity ofmodaldampingdueto power modulation ofan HVDC tieisquantified. Thelowfrequency interarea modedamping ratio(¢)isincreased from0.12to0.17by theuseofFrequency Sensitive PowerModulation, whereas theother parameters ofthetwomodeswere notaffected significantly. Thereby theeffectiveness ofan External Controlsystem on an HVDC transmission lineisquantified. Previous evaluations hadyielded only qualitative results.
