Concrete sewerage systems

Steel reinforced concrete sewer pipes have been used for over 50 years in Australia and Overseas. In many Instances these sewers were installed without the knowledge of the aggressive nature of the effluent. Corrosion has occurred in the concrete pipelines with the result that a number require replacement or repair. This paper provides a background to the corrosion of sewer pipelines, and a method of assessing the potential corrosivity of a sewerage environment. Using this information a method of designing for the aggressive conditions in concrete sewerage systems is presented.
