Abstract In a reversing mill, slab thickness is reduced to about 1/20 by screw down operations, and it is extremely difficult that the thickness of the finished product is controlled within 0.2 mm maintaining good shape. In traditional computer control, emphasis was placed on controlling the thickness while shape control was entrusted to the operator’s decision. This paper introduces an integrated computer control algorithm including shape control, where stochastic estimation techniques are applied for estimating variables and parameters of the process to improve accuracy. The application result of the algorithm to the process is also satisfactory.
