Electron Impact Excitation Spectra in an Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer

Electron impact excitation spectra have been obtained from an ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer by monitoring the current of scattered electrons transmitted along the ICR cell. The CCl4 and SF6 scavenger techniques were also used to verify specific features of these spectra. The spectrum of N2 is strongly influenced by the depth of potential well employed and the SF6 technique gives an identical spectrum to that of the scattered current monitor at higher well depths, indicating that the narrow energy width of the SF6 resonance capture peak does not influence the spectrum obtained in the ICR. Spectra of C6H5NO2 and CH3NO2 showed peaks which could be attributed to the NO2 group. NO2− ions interfered with the C6H5NO2 spectrum but not the CH3NO2 spectrum.
