MULTIPLE SENSOR WEIGH-IN-MOTION: OPTIMAL DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY

A multiple sensor (MS) array was designed and installed on a highway, initially for the OECD/DIVINE project. A weigh-in-motion (WIM) trial was carried out in June 1996 in the framework of the COST 323 European action. Two test vehicles made more than 100 runs and another 100 pre-weighed trucks from the traffic flow were used. The MS-WIM system was re-calibrated and its accuracy for estimating the static loads by a simple averaging method was assessed. Several sub-arrays, with 5 to 16 piezo-ceramic strip sensors at uniform spacing were considered, to find an optimum and economical design. This is part of the European research project 'WAVE', of the 4th Framework Transport program. For the covering abstract see IRRD E102667.
