Reconfigurable composite right/left-handed metamaterial

We report on a reconfigurable composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) using an InP heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) fabrication process. A four unit cell-TL design is realized with distributed capacitors and inductors with each unit cell featuring a Schottky diode that is used to control the left-handed wave propagation in the structure. Measured data shows good agreement with simulations and exhibits left hand propagation below 84.8 GHz. This is the first reported reconfigurable CRLH TL using a semiconductor fabrication process.
