A review of research on pulse detonation engine nozzles

Experimental and computational studies on nozzles for pulse detonation engines are reviewed in this paper. Direct comparisons of the results from various studies are not possible due to differences in the system parameters (nozzle shape, length, expansion ratios and ambient pressures) as well as the detonable mixtures considered. However, several common trends in the observations are noted. In addition, an attempt is made to reconcile apparently contradictory observations made in some previous studies. Whether the nozzle is pre-filled with a detonable mixture or with ambient air is an important factor in the interpretation of previous results. Research needs in this area are also discussed.
