On a new strategy for phase diagram calculation 2. Binary systems

Abstract The new strategy proposed in the first paper of this series is applied to binary phase diagram calculations. In addition, an algorithm is given in detail for carrying out the calculations. Using this algorithm, the stable phase equilibria are calculated automatically. The only input data for this program are the number of divisions of the compositional axis and the lower and upper limits of the temperature range to be calculated. The present strategy eliminates the two difficulties frequently encountered using the existing strategy. They are (i) the assurance that the calculated equilibria correspond to the stable equilibria, and (ii) the need of estimating initial values of the compositions and/or temperatures for calculating the heterogeneous phase equilibria. Two examples are given to demonstrate the power of the present approach.
