SOME PHYSICAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE ILLUSION IN SOUND MOTION PICTURES

The advent of talking pictures has brought the physicist and engineer face to face with problems which lie not only in the field of material things but also in the field of art. This implies that many of the criteria for the judgment of excellence may be of a psychological rather than a physical nature. The paper describes results of an empirical study of methods for controlling some of the factors available to the engineer in the field of sound recording and photography in such a manner that a pleasing illusion of reality is created in the theater. Empirical quantitative curves are given.
