Minimization of heat in the stator windings of a 3 phase induction motor using SPWM technique — an experimental study

The life time of the windings of the motor is an important factor in induction motor drives. The life time of the windings depends on the enamel coating, needed for isolation, on the windings of the induction motor. The windings of the induction motor heat up every time the induction motor is operated and this results in drastic reduction of the life time of the induction motor. Various techniques have been discussed in literature to minimize the temperature and its rate of increase in the stator windings. The causes for the heating of the stator windings are briefly discussed. In the present work, different SPWM (Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation) signals have been used to drive a low speed, high torque application of the induction motor. Reduced heating has been observed and this results in increase of life time of the windings of induction motor. Experimental results are presented.
