Long range acoustic communications

This paper presents some of the latest results obtained in the MAST-II "LORACOM" project dealing with long range acoustic communications in deep waters, in the different research fields involved: oceanographic modelling, acoustic modelling and signal processing techniques. The modelling aims at providing tools to help designing optimal transmission-reception schemes in a variety of situations; this is achieved by a software simulator of the time varying impulse response of the acoustic channel taking into account the stochastic fluctuations due to internal waves. Some data transmission results from two experiments at sea in deep water, including real time transmission and decoding of a page of text at 50 km range using binary phase shifted keying coded signals in less than one minute are presented.
