A Simple Flux Model Based Observer for Sensorless Control of Switched Reluctance Motor

This paper proposes a novel position estimation method for switched reluctance motors. It employs a simple flux model based observer that estimates rotor speed and rotor position. It runs rapidly due to the simplicity of the flux model and is suitable for real time control. The difference between the flux computed from the simple flux model and the measured flux drives the observer. Accuracy of the sensorless control method is demonstrated by simulation and an experimental system. Its low speed performance, high speed performance, transient responses, and limitations are presented.
