Chapter 3 Magnetooptical Properties of Hg1-x Cdx Te Alloys

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the quasi-germanium model, which gives a consistent description of the behavior of both the electrons and holes in Hg 1 — x Cd x Te and provides the dependence of the model parameters on alloy composition and temperature. It reviews the techniques of magneto-optics and comparing them with other techniques. It also describes the quasi-germanium model for Hg 1 — x Cd x Te, including approximate analytic expressions that are often useful. The chapter reviews the results of measurements on transitions within the conduction band. It describes the results of these measurements, which are a set of parameters, depending on alloy composition and temperature, for the quasi-germanium model for the electrons and holes in Hg 1 — x Cd x Te. Fairly simple expressions for these parameters and for other quantities of interest in device applications have been derived. Magneto-optical techniques have reached perhaps their most advanced state of sophistication when applied to semiconductors that crystallize in the zinc-blend structure. It also focuses on the magneto-optical results, particularly for alloys in the small-gap semiconductor region.
