Performance Evaluation of PEGASIS Protocol for Energy Efficiency

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has various application domains including environmental monitoring systems. Because there is a distance between the sensor node and the Base Station (BS) in the implementation of the environmental monitoring system, energy consumption will quickly run out. This study aims to implement the Power-Efficient Gathering in Sensor Information Systems (PEGASIS) protocol in the field of environmental monitoring systems to deal with energy consumption problems. We do the simulation using the Matlab application. Where the node placement scenario will be divided into 2, namely static and random. And BS will also be divided into several scenarios. Among them is the BS is placed in the middle of the network, outside the network, and the corner of the network. Then an analysis of the comparison between PEGASIS and Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) is conducted regarding the number of alive nodes, the number of die nodes, and remaining energy. Experiment result shows that the implementation of the PEGASIS protocol has a better performance than LEACH. Seen in the total number of die nodes in LEACH is in the round 600 range, while in PEGASIS in the round 1000 range.
