CONTOUR LINE RECONSTRUCTION: A NOVEL APPROACH

An extraction of contour lines from topographical map is an interesting problem in Geographical Information System. Earlier studies on contour line recognition are based on manual digitization and semi automated process that are inefficient, costly and time consuming process. Most of the contour line recognition procedures are based on color extraction scheme that results into broken line segments due to overlapping of features in topographic maps. The binary image consisting of broken contour line segments is used as an input in the presented work. This approach consists of three fundamental phases - Locate broken segments of the contour, determine end co-ordinate of all the contour line segments and then reconstruct broken segments to form the single contour. In this paper a novel method for contour lines recognition and reconstruction is proposed and is tested on several input binary image and provides satisfactory results and takes less time to trace the contour lines and reconstruct it.
