The highly competitive local and international grain markets of today warrant a closer examination on how U.S. markets can be made more efficient. Since transportation is a key element in the grain marketing process, it also becomes a focal point to which improvements in efficiency are targeted. Such efficiency improvements can be partly achieved by effectively gauging current and future demand for transportation services. This report presents transportation service demand projections for Kansas grain (wheat, corn, milo, and soybeans) and various classes of livestock. Patterns of grain supply and its inter-market distribution are estimated at the intra-district, inter-district, and inter-state levels.
