Abstract This paper may be considered as the continuation of the work described in the authors' previous publication when the effect of mass distribution on the dynamic characteristics of a vibrating structure was investigated [4]. The spindle bearing system is chosen as a good target for investigation with respect to the machine tool's performance. In the investigation carried out special interest is devoted to the effect of mass distribution on the dynamic behaviour of the structure while a viscous damper is also included between the bearings. The results obtained shows the positive role which the damper may play when optimising the above system's dynamic behaviour.
