Editorial: race, religion and the census

The inclusion of a question on religion in the 2001 Census in the UK has renewed interest in the relationship between empirical measurement and the assessment of religious and racialised affiliation. The authors discuss the context of this current debate and introduce a collection of four papers which address these issues.
