Introduction to Line‐Commutated HVDC

Summary This chapter introduces the application areas for thyristor high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and HVDC system topologies. It describes the basic components of HVDC systems and briefly explains the most commonly used types of cables for HVDC transmission. The methods and challenges of converting AC lines into HVDC are also analysed. The chapter concludes with an introduction to latest ultra-HVDC.
