Study of microvia failure under PCB flexing loads

This paper presents a study on microvia failure caused by mechanical flexing of a printed circuit board (PCB) assembly. Cross sectioning is perfonncd to dctcnnine the failure modes and failure locations. For the samples tested. failure is found to occur as a result of de1;nnination of the microvia joints from the PCB corc. An analysis of tlie load-dcflcction curves togerhcr with finite element (FE) inodcling is used to funher understand this vpe of nucrovia hilum For different bending conditions, there is a connuon trend of failure at the joint
