Pavement Crack Detection and Analysis for High-grade Highway

The image processing technology has been widely applied to maintaining and manipulating the high-grade highway, but it is difficult to make a balance between the processing effect and the processing speed. In order to solve this problem, we introduce the morphology to the pavement crack detection for the high-grade highway and propose a novel image processing method in this paper. The approached method reconstructs the median-filter algorithm with four structural elements to enhance the gray-scale pavement images, and combines the morphology-gradient operator with the morphology-close operator to extract the crack edges and fill the gaps of the cracks. After the above processing, the proposed method employs the improved morphology-erosion operator to thin the cracks and obtain the skeletons, and then gets the length and width of cracks by counting. Compared with other traditional methods, the experimental results indicate that our method can not only effectively extract the edges of cracks and evidently decrease the influence of noises, but also gain the exact characteristics of the pavement cracks.
