ANOTHER LOOK AT TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND ACCIDENTS

THE BEFORE AND AFTER ACCIDENT HISTORY IS EXAMINED FOR INTERSECTIONS WHERE VEHICLE-ACTUATED SIGNALS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED, TOGETHER WITH THE EFFECT OF REMODELLING THE SIGNALS AT 19 INTERSECTIONS AND THE INSTALLATION OF FLASHING RED/AMBER SIGNALS AT 25 INTERSECTIONS. THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF RIGHT ANGLE ACCIDENTS (CASUALTY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE) OCCURRING BEFORE TREATMENT PER INTERSECTION PER YEAR FOR THE THREE CASES WERE RESPECTIVELY 6.54, 5.92 AND 5.30. THE PERCENTAGE REDUCTION IN RIGHT ANGLE COLLISIONS FOR THE THREE CASES WAS RESPECTIVELY 71.6, 49.8 AND 52.2. ALL REDUCTIONS WERE HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT. A TWO-YEAR PERIOD WAS USED FOR BOTH THE BEFORE AND THE AFTER PERIOD. /AUTHOR/
