The research on the trigger characteristic of a three-electrode spark gap

A three-electrode spark gap, with trigger electrode inside the lower electrode, is discussed in this paper. Some characteristics have been determined experimentally such as the influence of the air pressure on spark gap operation and the influence of the working undervoltage ratio on spark gap operation. Delay times were measured, and the statistical analysis of the obtained results is presented in the paper. Meanwhile, delay time as a function of working undervoltage ratio is evaluated, and it is found that working undervoltage ratio over 50% could effectively shorten the delay time. The result demonstrate that the operating voltage range between 50% and 70% might be considered for advancing trigger characteristic, prolonging the trigger electrode life and reducing the probability of self-fire.
