Determination of the synchronization criteria of line start IPM motors

This paper provides analytical, simulation and experimental results to investigate the synchronization capability of line start IPM motors for different loading conditions. Approximate solution techniques based on average torque analysis for determining the critical slip and maximum inertia of a line start IPM motor for various types of load are also presented. A d-q axis model including the cage resistance and reactance is developed to analyze the run up responses of a 1 hp, 3-phase, 4-pole line start interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. Experimental investigations have been also carried out for the same 1 hp IPM motor and test results are presented to support simulation results.
