New visualization aspects related to intelligent solution procedure in papermaking optimization

1. Abstract Solving multiobjective optimization problems and presenting the solutions become complex when the problems contain more than two objectives to be optimized. Two-dimensional objective space can easily be shown with any visualizing software. However, in real life optimization problems there are often several objectives that should be optimized simultaneously. In this paper, we study papermaking optimization problems as process line optimization problems and introduce a new solution procedure that utilizes virtual reality technology for visualizing. Aim is to assist the user in solving the optimization problem by a visualization aid which makes possible to zoom, rotate and even immerse into solution space. Virtual reality is a computer created environment developed for these purposes. It can be used for visualizing three-dimensional objects. Here, we consider an intelligent solution procedure, in which the virtual reality is seen as a part of the solution process. Then, based on realistic visualization, dierences and trade-os between the solutions can be studied more evidently. The new solution procedure is illustrated by an example. 2.
