Abstract A force gauge designed to measure longitudinal stress in a blood vessel in situ was tested for frequency response, force-displacement coefficient, hysteresis, linearity, and stability of calibration and baseline. These performance characteristics were found to be adequate. Typical results from a dog experiment were used to illustrate the application of the gauge under physiological conditions.
