The dosimetric characteristics of two types of personal neutron dosemeter have recently been extensively assessed. The effects of exposure to various extreme environments have also been studied. Both types of dosemeter utilise chemically etched elements which are read in an automated reader, the Autoscan 60, which uses an edge illumination system to increase the pit image size. One type of dosemeter contains three elements in a pyramid structure. The other uses one or two elements in a planar structure. The results indicate that both types of dosemeter can be used to assess accurately the personal dose from neutrons in a range of harsh environments. Formal approval for the operational use of the system has been received.
