Throughout the past decade transport projects have played a pivotal role in support of economic development and poverty alleviation. This evaluation, using objectives-based methodology, assesses the World Bank’s activities in the transport sector during the past 10 years together with its preparedness to meet emerging challenges. It concludes that although past performance has been well managed and effective, especially for intercity highway construction and rehabilitation, transport must also give more focus on vital issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution, safety, and affordability which will have to be given greater priority. This will necessitate more innovative multisectoral approaches to resolve the complex global concerns confronting us in the future.
