Monostatic RCS reduction at mmWaves

This article presents the design of planar dielectric non-absorptive surfaces for monostatic Radar Cross Section (RCS) reduction at mmWaves. The proposed planar surfaces are composed of only dielectric unit cells that are designed in such away to exhibit 0o reflection phases at 71GHz and 88GHz, respectively. By controlling the amount of the phase difference (180o±30o) between the adjacent unit cells in the building block of the proposed surfaces over wide frequency range, the incident EM-wave will be backscattered in angles other than specular direction and the monostatic RCS will significantly be reduced. Dielectric surfaces of building blocks have 2×2, 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 unit cells are investigated in details to more understand the behavior of the RCS reduction level, RCS reduction bandwidth, grating lobe direction and level and the best configuration is to be addressed. The results show that a remarkable monostatic RCS reduction from 71GHz to 90GHz is achieved. Two 65×65×1.27mm3 planar surfaces of different building blocks and unit cell distribution across the aperture of the surface are fabricated and then characterized experimentally.
